Sketch

Dec 27, 2015

You can’t call Sketch an overnight success. Its creator, Pieter Omvlee, has been working on it for 10 years now. But what Sketch has achieved in that timespan is truly noteworthy.

Sketch, a Mac only software, has become “quite the darling among design teams right now.” A formidable ecosystem of templates and plugins outpaces that of Adobe Photoshop in areas of UI and icon design, an uncanny feat considering the reputation of Adobe in graphic design.

While Photoshop shines in areas of print design and traditional graphic arts, it’s not as versatile when it comes to designing user interfaces and “slicing” them for web use.

That flexibility explains why the Sketch App Resources site already features 1,720 dashboards, icon sets, UI kits and templates, most available free of charge.

Sketch’s popularity stems from an innovative infinite canvas that can easily be partitioned into separate areas or “slices.” Another reason for Sketch’s success is that it’s far more intuitive to use than Photoshop, which, over its nearly 30-year history, has become quite complex.
